Floods, hurricanes, earthquakes… Latin America and the Caribbean countries often are affected by natural disasters. In times of emergency, children and adolescents are likely to become displaced, separated from their families, or physically and psychologically impacted. They are exposed to an increased risk of violence, abuse and exploitation, which calls for the implementation of specific protection measures. In such situations, we all have a role to play.

OFDA and the Child Protection Working Group are hosting an event in Washington D.C. on Case Management and other Child Protection Challenges in Emergencies. Fundraising for Child Protection programmes can be difficult, especially in the first days of an emergency response when other interventions can be seen as more urgent. This upcoming workshop, hosted by OFDA and facilitated by ChildFund Alliance and the Child Protection Working Group, will explore the different ways Child Protection Professionals can improve proposal-writing skills and relationships with institutional donors. On 14 October, OFDA and the Child Protection Working Group will present a 2-hour interactive session on the Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action (CPMS, Sphere Companion). This whistle-stop tour is aimed at staff based at headquarters or in the field, working on humanitarian response, protection, child protection, violence prevention, grant writing or communications.
